Water Mist, Sprinklers or Gas? How to Choose the Right Fire Suppression System

There is no single fire suppression system that is always best. The right choice starts from the hazard and the space — not from price or habit. Here is a simple comparison of the three most common systems.

Quick comparison

Conventional sprinklers Water mist Gas
How it suppresses Water spray cools and controls the fire Fine droplets absorb heat and limit oxygen and radiant heat Gas released into the room suppresses the fire without water
Water volume Higher Much lower No water used
Usually suited to Most buildings and general areas Tunnels, theatres, heritage buildings, museums, hotels, electrical rooms, generator rooms and server rooms Sealed rooms and equipment sensitive to water
What to consider Water damage, tank and pump size Hazard-specific design, clean water, filtration and maintenance A sealed room, a fixed gas quantity that must be recharged after discharge, and life-safety considerations

5 questions that point to the right system

  1. What is the hazard: solid combustibles, flammable liquids or electrical equipment?
  2. Are people inside the space during a fire?
  3. How sensitive are the contents to water?
  4. Can the space be sealed (an essential condition for gas systems)?
  5. What space and infrastructure are available for tanks and pumps?

After that comes the engineering study, based on the code adopted by the project and the requirements of the relevant authority.

Frequently asked questions

Do all sprinklers discharge when one activates?

In most conventional sprinkler systems each sprinkler operates on its own when the heat at its location reaches a set level, so water falls where the fire is. Deluge systems are designed to open all nozzles together by intent.

Is gas safe for people?

It depends on the gas type and the design. Gas systems include an alarm and a delay before discharge, and some types (such as CO2) need strict precautions.
