This is a general checklist to help you assess your facility’s fire system quickly. It is initial guidance and does not replace a formal inspection by a competent party.
The checklist
- Last fire pump test: do you know its date and result? A pump that has not been tested cannot be relied on.
- Detector testing: a dirty or faulty detector may delay the alarm.
- Alarm panel batteries: they power the system when mains power is lost.
- Valve positions: are they in the correct position and secured? A closed valve means a system that will not work.
- Exit signs and lighting: they should be visible and lit.
- Extinguishers: are they in date and tagged with an inspection date?
- A written report for the last maintenance: without a report there is no evidence the inspection took place.
- Evacuation plan and regular drills: have they been tried recently?
- System review after building changes: new partitions or a change of use can change what the system must do.
- A current maintenance contract: is there a clear inspection schedule and a responsible party?
How to read your result
If your answer is “I don’t know” on more than two points, that is a signal the facility needs a technical review and a regular maintenance contract.
